Specialism – Game Environment Artist / Layout
Woody is an aspiring Environment Artist with a very definite talent for creating atmospheric, narrative driven scenes in Unreal Engine 5. His third-year work has been in developing immersive environments, building on a clear understanding of industry workflows.
Drawing on a background in Photography and Media—along with a personal passion for drone photography—Woody brings a refined eye for composition, lighting, and environmental storytelling. His Final Major Project explores the full process of environment creation within Unreal, from early research and reference gathering through to modular asset placement, blueprinting, and final lighting passes. The project centres on a medieval castle and surrounding town, rendered with a moody Chiaroscuro lighting scheme that uses torchlight, fog, and environmental detail to evoke a rich, cinematic atmosphere.
Woody’s use of kitbash and marketplace content is thoughtful and deliberate, demonstrating a strong grasp of asset management, level composition, and player flow. His incorporation of structural logic—supported by personal research into medieval architecture—adds a layer of believability often lacking in student projects.
Now graduating, Woody is aiming to enter the games industry as a Junior Environment Artist. His growing portfolio demonstrates not just technical skill, but also an understanding of the collaborative, multidisciplinary nature of game development. With his attention to lighting, mood, and world-building, he is well-placed to contribute to atmospheric and exploration-driven projects.
