Solent University students have the unique opportunity to engage with a variety of live briefs. This page provides a brief overview of current client projects available within the Solent CGI/VFX and Games Art courses. Students are encouraged to participate in any of these projects.
Participating in these projects offers numerous benefits, including gaining practical work experience, engaging in research, and exploring areas such as Virtual Production. Additionally, students can earn IMDB credits or even secure paid positions through Solent Creatives.
These projects are designed to bridge the gap between academic learning and industry practices, providing students with real-world experience that enhances their portfolios and resumes. By collaborating with industry professionals, students can develop valuable networking connections that may lead to future career opportunities.

Project : Dancing with Death - In Progress, Delivery Summer 2024
Work Required : VFX, Virtual Production/ Game Engine, Photogrammetry, Crowd Simulation
Summary : A contemporary short telling a story of Death, fatigued by his role and wishing to retire. This is a beautiful and ambitious short, with a great chance to play with some Virtual Production tools and you’ll be working with studios for this project. More the merrier!

Project : The “Stina & the Wolf” CGI feature film project is an ambitious attempt to develop an industry quality motion captured and animated magical realist feature film in unreal game engine. The project is run by the animation studio Foam Digital based in the University of Portsmouth. We are very keen to collaborate with Solent University Students, as the course covers very similar areas to ours.
Work Required : Motion capture cleanup, Hand-modelled assets. (Done in any software), Unreal kit-bashed sets developed from concept art (Combining hand made and/or Epic Mega Scan objects), Finger & hand animation on motion capture characters (Maya with Metahuman), Face animation (Using free FACEGOOD tracking software on Metahuman in Maya), Full keyframe creature animation (in Maya - we have lots of angry goats!), Assorted Houdini simulations for export to Unreal (in open VDB etc.), Cloth simulation done in either Marvellous Designer or Houdini.

We run a lot of the project via discord where we have an active and supportive community. (And real-life social events!)

Project : The Boxer - Pre-Production, Delivery Winter 2024
Work Required : VFX, Virtual Production/ Game Engines
Summary : A great little project if you or a group of friends are looking to have a play with Virtual Production for the first time without the pressure of deadlines/ time constraints. We are currently mocking up a short 2 minute monologue with a hope to film using VP in the Winter months. You’ll be working with studios for this project.

Project : The Apocalypse Box
Status : Seeking Distribution Deal


Project : Gallowmere - Delivery Summer 2024
Work Required : VFX
Summary : In the finale, our heroes battle an entity from a photoscanned monolith, with an actor in a morph suit for reference. WonderDynamics/Roko AI creates a humanoid figure in a vortex-like smoke simulation. The monolith, pulsing with faces of damned souls, is destroyed by the hero in slow motion. Key tasks include CG particles, an animated monolith, a CG energy bubble, green screen cleanup, and roto work. The finale location is recreated in Unreal Engine, though isolated shots may require a separate 3D program.

Project : RedX - Pre-Production, Delivery Winter 2024
Work Required : VFX, On Set Supervision
Summary : An exciting DC universe inspired story of the character RedX. A large film crew and with filming to take place in London, the team have employed a parkour specialist for action sequences.

Project : Fort Purbrook - Ongoing/ In Progress
Work Required : Research focused, Game Engines (Unreal), potentially VR exploration, LiDAR data sets, optional Site visits to Portsmouth, Scanning and Retopology/ Texture Work for Mastering scans to Sketchfab platform.
This is an ongoing research project and you are welcome to explore any of the data sets available if you choose, excellent for either Games or VFX Layout experimentation. If you wish to have some data sets regardless for learning, please get in touch and I can share.
Notes : Already recipient of £11,000 RIKE seed funding that has funded 2 x student placements. No current budget, potentially in future if VR testing successful.

Project : Symetrica Product Videos - In Progress, Delivery Summer 2024
Work Required : UE scene assembly from kits and shots (some VP shots), some ‘x-ray’ FX, CAD conversion, some modelling, storyboarding
Summary : Product demo videos of radiation detectors (handheld and portal) for local company.

Project : Lost @ Sea - Pre-Production, Delivery Winter 2024
Work Required : VFX, On Set Supervision
Summary : A contemporary short telling a story of love and loss, set in Southampton. Some very clever VFX trickery required for this one. Principal photography in September with VFX due by Christmas '24
