The project is about the combination of ancient Greek mythology and science fiction, bringing the Myth of Orpheus and Eurydice to life through the art of 3D modelling, whilst using powerful software tools: ZBrush, Substance Painter, Maya, Photoshop and After Effects, to create a detailed and realistic rendition of the tragic love story. All these programs were chosen due to their range of tools, in addition to them being the industry standard: ZBrush – Soft Sculpting; Substance Painter – Texturing; 3DS Max – Hard modelling and Rendering; Photoshop – Concept art and compositing still shots; and After Effects – Compositing 360 Video.
The story of Orpheus and Eurydice is about a musician (Orpheus) who journeyed to the underworld to bring his wife (Eurydice) back from the dead after she was bitten by a serpent. After charming Hades with his music, he agrees to let him take Eurydice back with him, on the condition that he would not look back until they have reached the upper world. Orpheus couldn’t resist the urge to make sure she was still following him. The moment he gave in to those urges, she was pulled back to the underworld – lost forever.
By incorporating a sci-fi element, parallels are drawn between the original story and the modern notion of technology addiction and dependence. Just as Orpheus was drawn to the under-world for a reason that he believed was worthwhile, people are drawn to technology for reasons they believe will make their life better, but malicious algorithms and Artificial Intelligence, such as the ones found on social media, draw people in, in the same way Orpheus couldn’t resist looking for his lover. While Orpheus might have had the illusion that he was in control, the darker reality was that he was being controlled by Hades. Similarly, individuals may think they have control over their social media consumption, but the algorithms keep them scrolling for longer and the fact that their attention is the product, indicates that it is actually the technology with the true control. Ultimately, everything comes with a price, and the illusion of control may come at great costs.
