MALACHY GAVIN  |  BA (Hons) CGI and Visual Effects
Specialism – Prop and Hard Surface Artist
Malachy Gavin has been one of this year’s most committed and technically focused 3D artists, with a very clear passion for hard surface modelling and prop design for games and cinematic worlds. His eye for detail and strong understanding of topology have really come into their own this year, especially in his hard surface modelling work where he has excelled in his development in Maya.
For his Final Major Project, Malachy focused on building out a detailed 3D environment inspired by the Upgrade Desk from Bloodborne—a dark, atmospheric scene populated with a set of custom-designed props. Drawing from extensive reference research and a solid workflow across Maya, ZBrush, Blender, and Substance Painter, he’s created a richly layered and stylistically coherent final piece. The attention to clean topology, UV layout, and texturing brings a high level of polish to the work.
Alongside the main scene, Malachy produced a series of mini-projects to help sharpen his skills on iconic assets—such as Aloy’s Champion Spear and Joel’s Flamethrower—each one helping to inform his approach to scale, form, and material readability. He’s consistently engaged with industry expectations, posting his work on platforms like The Rookies and LinkedIn to gather feedback and benchmark against a professional standard.
With a strong commitment to technical learning and a clear love of stylised and cinematic game worlds, Malachy’s work this year shows real promise for roles in hard surface environment or prop art—especially in studios focused on richly detailed narrative settings.
