Specialism – Houdini Tech Artist
For my Final Major Project at university, I decided to replicate the Minimoys procedural wall asset made by Marc Chevry: https://www.artstation.com/artwork/rRBKP5
After studying Houdini in a few previous assessments, I was intrigued by the procedural and node-based workflow it offers. Chevry’s tool also doesn’t give a full explanation of how to produce the asset, so it was an interesting project for me to take on and try to create my own, using my own methods. The project was a large learning curve for me as I hadn’t delved into VEX and programming much before this tool, besides the brick wall tool I had created previously.
All in all, this was a great learning experience for me as it allowed me to gain knowledge within scripting and the nodes that are available to be used within Houdini. It also gave me a good insight into industry practice and the expected features of digital assets. I also had contact with a few professionals which only furthered my knowledge of the industry pipeline.
I was really happy with the outcome of my tool as it works on a very similar idea as Chevry’s. I would make a few improvements, such as more customization for the arches, and the option to add more or remove them. I would also add more subdivisions to the bricks, however, using the ‘labs lot subdivision’ didn’t work very well for me. This is something I will improve on and update on my portfolio.
Tool work through below, please do contact me to discuss.
